FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q.  Are girls allowed to play boys' lacrosse?

A. Yes, girls are allowed to play boys' lacrosse as long as there is not a Girls program offered at their age level.  The rules for boys' and girls' lacrosse can be quite different.  Girls' lacrosse is essentially a non-contact sport.  Boys' lacrosse has no checking at the youngest levels but progresses to full body checking by high school.

Q.  Will there ever be a girls' lacrosse team?

A.  Yes, Janesville Lacrosse currently has a High School Program as well as a Youth program.  What we need are a few more Coaches and players interested at the Youth levels to prepare the players for High School competition.

Q. How long is the lacrosse season?

A. The lacrosse season generally runs from around mid-March through the 1st week in June.

Q.  When does the club practice?

A. It depends on the level of play.  The high school teams usually  four to five days a week (M-F) from 4:30 - 6:15 pm.  The youth teams usually practice two days a week from 5:15 pm - 6:45 pm.  The practice schedule is usually Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesday and Thursday.  These schedules may change slightly depending on the availability of coaches and field space.

Q.  Is a US Lacrosse membership required?

A.  Yes, a US Lacrosse membership is required for all players youth through high school in the state of Wisconsin.

Q.  What equipment do I need?

A. Players will need to supply all of their own equipment including (for boys) a helmet, gloves, elbow pads, shoulder pads, mouth-guard, protective cup, and a stick. The Girls equipment is limited to protective eyewear, light gloves, and a stick.  Players may also wish to have footwear such as cleats.

Q. Where can we buy equipment?

A.  Unfortunately, there aren't many retailers in the Janesville area that a re carrying lacrosse equipment.  In the Janesville area, we recommend Dicks Sporting Goods, which carries a moderate inventory of lacrosse equipment.  There are also quite a few options on the internet.

Q.  I play another spring sport can I still play lacrosse?

A.  Yes, ideally it would be nice to have all the players attend all of the practices.  It is understood that some players will play other sports.  The Janesville Lacrosse Club thinks young athletes should be allowed to try a variety of sports.  Keep in mind that those that attend the practices are more likely to improve and advance their skills faster than those who miss practice.  In addition, those who attend practice regularly may get a little more playing time on game day.

Q. I've never played lacrosse before can I still participate?

A. Absolutely.  Lacrosse is a relatively new sport to our area.  Every year we get beginners at all levels including high school.  Each season, the coaching staffs dedicates a large percentage of time to teaching fundamentals.

Q.  Where are the games played?

A.  Typically, the schedule is split between home and away games.  This means that half of the schedule will be played in Janesville.  The away games are almost exclusively played within an hour drive from Janesville.  Teams in our conference include Elkhorn, Kettle Moraine, Watertown, DeForest, La Crosse, Madison Westside, Madison Eastside, Oregon, Verona, Middleton, Waunakee, Sun Prairie, Stoughton and Sauk Prairie.

Q. I'd like to help but I don't know a thing about the sport.

A.  That's OK we are well aware that most of the people in the area are unfamiliar with the sport.  In fact, almost everybody currently involved with club had no background or experience with lacrosse prior to volunteering with the club.  We'll work with anybody that is willing to help to make sure they have a positive experience.
